ARIZONA WILL NOT BEND

  rss202

By Mark Anderson

State Sen. Russell Pearce, who authored Arizona’s landmark bill last April to help stem the high tide of illegal immigration, says that America’s left wing is “demagoguing” the situation surrounding the disturbed man who opened fire in Tucson on Jan. 8, killing six with his pistol and wounding several others, including a member of Congress from Arizona, Gabrielle Giffords. She is reportedly recovering.

Pearce, a fierce opponent of loose border laws and gun control, told AMERICAN FREE PRESS in an exclusive interview Jan. 11 that he was named president of the state Senate on Jan. 10 and will do everything in his power to make sure the tragedy that also took the lives of nine-year-old Christina Green and John Roll, chief judge of the U.S. District for Arizona, are not exploited by political demagogues and media propagandists to give Americans a false sense of justice and security.

“What we are not going to do is disarm the citizens and make them more vulnerable to the bad guys,” Pearce declared.

Also, Pearce predicted that his bill that makes it a state crime to be in Arizona illegally—known as S.B. 1070—will withstand opponents’ increased attacks. Many of the bill’s critics of the measure are now claiming that the alleged climate of “hate” and unrest that supposedly inspired Jared Lee Loughner to open fire is partially fueled by S.B. 1070.

USA Today on Jan. 10 noted: “Fears about illegal immigration across the border with Mexico led the state . . . last year to enact the nation’s toughest crackdown. The state also has lenient gun laws,” implying stricter border laws and less restrictive firearms ownership help explain why people like Loughner snap.

Suggestions that free speech should be toned down were littered throughout the same article, which claimed “harsh rhetoric” and “angry politics” might spark violent behavior.

“They are so desperate,” Pearce responded, referring to pro-amnesty forces and others. “They use this [tragedy] to try to advance their agenda. They would love to figure out a way to defuse [S.B.] 1070.”

When asked about Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik calling Arizona “racist,” while suggesting he might not enforce S.B. 1070, Pearce replied, “There is teeth in [S.B.] 1070 that compels law enforcement to enforce the law.” He says the law has decreased the state’s crime rate, though it has been in effect less than a year.

The nation, Pearce suggested, should also remember Border Patrol agent Brian Terry, 40, of Flatrock, Mich., who was fatally shot in the line of duty at the hands of five border bandits in December 2010 in Rio Rico, Ariz. Then there was Arizonan Robert Krantz, fatally shot, as was his dog, by an illegal alien almost one year ago on a border ranch that his family has owned for several generations.
